Baby Drowns In Sink
In Havre, Montana, a day care provider was charged with negligent homicide for the drowning of a 6 month old girl in her care in 2006. The woman said she left Jenna Unruh in a bathing suit in a sink while she went to another room to change another infant’s diaper. When she returned, the baby’s head was under water. Child Chokes on Carrot
In Hickville, New York, the state of child family services shut down the Carousel Day School after Olivia Raspanti, two, choked to death on a carrot while in their care. An agency spokesman said there were no records of the facility ever being issued a licence to operate a child care center. (USA Today, 3-19-2009, p. 3A)
Baby Left in Hot Van
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a man who had just started a job as a day care driver, was charged in the death of a 4-month-old boy who was left in a hot van. Jalen Knox-Perkins died of hypothermia due to heat exposure after being left in the childcare vehicle unattended. (USA Today, 4-15-2009, p. 6A)
Boy Dies in Daycare Sandbox
In Calhan, Colorado, a four-year-old boy suffocated after he put his head in a hole in the day care center sandbox. The sand then collapsed around him. Carl Anderson was under the sand for about a minute before being discovered. He was rushed to a hospital in Colorado Springs, where he was pronounced dead. (USA Today, 4-29-2008, p. 7A)
