Cases of children being abducted by strangers are a rare occurrence, at least compared to other child safety issues. Yet, for every successful abduction, there are often a dozen or more unsuccessful attempts. This is the reason why it is so important for parents
to be on guard. Often times, an abductor will simply keep trying until he finds the weakest link. Here are some news stories related to abduction attempts:

Child Abduction Cases

  • In Riviera Beach, Florida, a man was arrested for attempted child abduction after trying to snatch a child from a stroller. Police say the man jumped off his bike and was arrested as he tried to remove the child from the stroller. (USA Today, 2-1-2017, 4A)
  • In Des Moines, Iowa, authorities warned parents about a string of possible child abduction attempts. Officials were investigation 6 reports in the past 3 weeks involving a man in a vehicle who would follow a child. No arrests were made, and no children were harmed in the incidents. (9-4-2009)
  • In Des Moines, Iowa, authorities issued a warning after 5 attempted abductions took place, along with an assault, all involving girls in Guthrie County and the Des Moines area.  Officials said the attempts, which began on June 9th, involved an unknown man trying to entice juvenile girls. The assaults have happened in Dallas Center, Pannora, Urbandale, and Des Moines, and officials believe they were all related. (USA Today, 6-20-2008, pg 6A)
  • In Dover, Delaware, police say that Alfonso Rondo of Wilmington entered the backyard of a home in Dover and tried grabbing a boy that was playing on a swing set. He let the boy go when neighbors confronted him. He was later arrested and charged with trespassing and second-degree kidnapping. (USA Today, 9-232006, p. 17A)
