Carbon monoxide poisoning is the silent killer…in more ways than one.  Not only does it kill its victims without a sound, but it quietly racks up a total of around 500 deaths each year without much media attention. Here are some examples of how it happens:

Child Dies of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
In Hopedale, Massachusetts, an autopsy was scheduled for a boy who died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning on an excursion in the woods. Alejandro Thomasian, 9, was four-wheeling with another boy and three adults when one of the vehicles got stuck. Several children stayed inside the vehicle to keep warm while the adults tried to free the Jeep. The kids were later found unconscious. (USA Today, 4-29-2008, p. 7A)

3 Teens Die
In Tallahoma, Tennessee, 3 teens were found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning after their off-road utility vehicle got stuck in the mud. (USA Today, 7-1-2008, p. GA)

Carbon Monoxide Scare
In Bismarck, North Dakota, four children and two adults were treated for exposure to carbon monoxide after high levels of the deadly gas filled the pool area at a local hotel. (1/20/2015)

Family Dies in Cabin
In Byron, Maine, 4 youths and a dog found dead in a nearby cabin, are suspected to have died of carbon monoxide poisoning. (USA Today, 7-20-2015)
