When children are hit by cars, one of the most common causes is that they chase a ball, pet, or other child into the street. Lost in their play, or focused on retrieving an object, they forget to pay attention to traffic.
A rather unique role reversal of the familiar script:
In Jacksonville, Florida, a 12-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car while involved with a dog… not because he was chasing a dog into the street, but because the dog chased him into traffic. It’s a rather sad and tragic reminder that whatever else might be going on, its’ important not to run out into the street.
