Boy on Sled Struck By Car
In Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, a 7-year-old boy was killed at the Hyak Sno-Park at Snoqualmie Pass while sledding. Jacob Ponce-Espionozo apparently flew off his sled into a roadway and was struck by a passing car. He was airlifted to a Seattle medical center, where he died. (USA Today, 2-21-2011 p. 4A)

Boy Hit by ATV While Sledding
In Port Orchard, Washington, a man was charged with vehicular assault and hit and run after striking a child with his ATV. According to police, the 10-year-old boy was sledding north on Banner Road in the Olalla area when he collided with 53-year-old Peter Ohman, who was traveling South on the same road. Fact:
More than 20,000 kids end up in the ER each year due to sledding injuries. In one study, 6,000 of these accidents happened when the sled was being pulled by a car or an ATV.

Interesting to note: In 2009, in response to a number of sled-related injuries and deaths, Massachusetts began a crackdown on sledding. Some communities banned the practice outright, others elected warning signs to caution people about
the danger. State Senator Steven Panagiptakos also introduced a bill that would require children to wear helmets while riding a sled. (The Week, 2-13-2009, p. 4)

Preschooler Sleds Into Car
In Grandrapids, Michigan, a 4-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a car in a sledding accident. Gabriel Castillo Jr. Was sledding at a local park with his family when the sled veered off course and ended up in the street. (January 27, 2015)

Sledding No No’s
In Plainfield, Connecticut, a local man was arrested after police say he was found pulling kids on a sled behind his speeding pick-up truck.  He faces charges of risk of injury to a minor, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment. (1/28/2015)
