The leading cause of unexpected death among children isn’t kidnapping or murder or school shootings or any of those other splashy, headline-grabbing topics parents tend to spend the most time obsessing about. It’s more everyday childhood accidents. From home accidents to car accidents to water accidents, there are potential hazards almost everywhere you turn. Each year in the United States, household accidents involving children claim the lives of roughly 2000 kids under the age of 14. Millions more are sent to the emergency room. And that’s without ever leaving their home.

When it comes to children and childhood accidents, Murphy’s law applies: whatever can happen will happen. Given enough time and the litany of possibilities, if its possible for children to injure themselves with something, they’re certain to find a way to do it.

You can’t live your life in fear or wrap your child inside a protective bubble. But a little extra awareness certainly does’ hurt, especially since many hazards are virtually unknown to many parents. This area is dedicated to bringing greater awareness to accidents involving children, with the hope that this awareness translates into fewer deaths and trips to the emergency room.
