Here are some notable stories from around the U.S. in the past week:

• In Bakersfield, California, a small child believed to be around 4 or 5-years-old died when the storage unit his family was living in caught on fire.

• In Weymouth, Massachusetts, a 2-year-old girl was hospitalized after swallowing a synthetic opioid pill. If parents have a prescription for these they need to keep them well guarded. A single pill of some of these medications is enough to kill a small child, and opioid overdoses involving children are on the rise.

• In Haines City, Florida, an 11-year-old girl who was fiddling with her pone and wearing head phones at the time was struck and killed by an Amtrak train. Most children and teens who are killed by trains were either listening to music or otherwise distracted at the time, and since trains can extend several feet off the track in either direction, the child doesn’t need to be on the track themselves to be struck. Be sure to talk with your kids about this danger.

• Authorities in Huston, Texas, took custody of a 4-year-old boy who they believe was living in a closet. He told investigators the rats and cockroaches were “his friends.”
