Today’s Class Assignment: Friendly Letters to Cop Killers
In Orange, New Jersey, a third grade teacher came up with an interesting class assignment: she apparently had her students write “get will” cards to a convicted cop killer currently serving a life sentence for the 1981 murder of officer Daniel Faulkner. She was fired over the incident.
While I can understand the controversy this created, there is a part of me that wants to play devil’s advocate here and assume that most teachers mean well. So on the other side of the coin: aren’t we supposed to be teaching our children that everyone deserves compassion? After all, isn’t it a lack of compassion that creates situations like this in the first place?
