School Bus Driver Passes Out At The Wheel
3-28-08
Forty-four children on a field trip to an Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee, were dealt a scary experience as their bus driver passed out at the wheel. The bus was owned by Adventure Bus Charter & Tours, Inc., of Sumiton.
A math teacher on the bus, Amy King, tried to take hold of the wheel to keep the coach from swerving into oncoming traffic. She managed to avoid a head-on collision, but wasn’t able to right the bus. It went off the road, sideswiping 200 feet worth of guardrail before coming to a rest…upside down in a drainage ditch.
Twenty people were sent to the hospital in the crash, most of them children. The driver of the bus was also injured. The teacher who tried to rescue the out of control vehicle was thrown through the windshield in the crash and was listed in serious condition. The accident occurred about 30 miles Northeast of Birmingham.
The students in the bus were part of a Convoy from the Morris School. The bus involved in the accident was the lead bus out of 3 chartered by the school. Other chaperones were also following behind in their private cars. There was no word on what caused the driver to black out.
