Tragedy was narrowly averted in Hawaii this week after a toddler wandered away from his family and nearly fell off a 400-foot cliff.

The group had been watching the erupting Kilauea volcano when the boy wandered off “in a split second” while the family was distracted, captivated by the glow of the lava. He ran straight towards the edge of a nearby cliff. His screaming mother was able to grab him just in the nick of time.

I’ve heard of lemmings making a run for the cliff, but apparently, human children do it too. The difference is that humans don’t come equipped with wings. So let this be a reminder to keep your tots close in potentially dangerous situations. It only takes a second.
