Charity Acidently Hands Out Free Meth
Last month a charity in New Zealand unknowingly passed out 90 fake candies that actually contained chunks of methamphetamine. The individually-wrapped ‘pineapple’ hard candies had been donated to the Auckland City Mission by a member of the public for its food for the poor program.
Each fake candy weighed about 3 grams–enough to deliver a potentially fatal dose of the drug, especially if ingested by a child. At least 8 different families sampled the candy. Thankfully, those who popped one into their mouth said the treats tasted terrible and quickly spat them back out, so no serious injuries were reported.
This episode was likely an accident as opposed to a malicious act. Both drug users and smugglers will often disguise drugs as everyday items in order to hide their stash from police, and I’m sure that somewhere out there there’s someone mighty upset about having lost or misplaced that much meth. Either way, it’s yet one more example of how drug use can pose a danger to the public.
