Screwdriver In The Brain? No Problem For This Tough Tot

As a parent, you tell your kids a lot of things. But have you ever
told them it’s not a good idea to stick screwdrivers through their
brains? If you’re anything like the rest of us, you probably never
thought such a thing was necessary. Apparently it is, as one Arizona mother found out, after her 2-year-old daughter apparently shoved a screwdriver into her own eye.
It took doctors two hours to remove the instrument, which had
entered the frontal lobe of the brain through the child’s eye socket. An x-ray of the lodged object showed the screwdriver piercing about half-way through the child’s head. Amazingly, the little girl survived the ordeal, and seemed to be fine afterwards. Her only sign of injury was a little mark above her eye, though doctors couldn’t be certain if any long-term damage would occur. As mind boggling as it sounds, it appears that this was not the result of an injury or accident, Rather, the toddler says she put the tool into her eye. Why? Well, because it was there of course. I mean, C’mon, haven’t we all at least thought about sticking screwdrivers through our brains before?
We joke because all seems to have turned out well. But this is yet another example of the golden rule for parents: If there is a way for children to injure themselves with it, they’ll find it. (And we mean ANY way…) Watch them like a hawk, keep screwdrivers out of their reach, and train the older siblings as extra eyes and ears for safety with the book ‘What Bigger Kids Can Do.’
