Baby Shot In Head With Nail Gun
July 19, 2007
A 3-month-old boy who was at a construction site with his parents, was the victim of a freak accident Thursday evening. The child was being cuddled in his mothers arms, when a nail that was fired from a nail gun somehow ricocheted off it’s intended target and lodged in the baby’s head.
The accident occurred in the 1600 block of Highway 38 Road, a
construction site in Delta, Colorado. “Quite frankly, our investigation shows this was a tragic, freakish type accident,” said
Delta Police Chief Rich Bacher. “It doesn’t appear that (the child) was dangerously close to construction workers.”
According to accounts of the event, a construction worker fired a round headed 10-D framers nail, which somehow ricocheted off the boards and stuck in the child’s head. After the incident, the mother handed the infant to his father, who attempted to hold the boy still and keep him from moving until emergency workers arrived. It was unsure how deep the nail penetrated or whether the wound inflicted permanent damage. The baby underwent treatment Thursday night at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
Thankfully, later reports indicated that the child fully recovered from his injury, and did not appear to suffer any permanent damage.
