Penalized For Doing What Is Right
In Galion, Ohio, a 12-year-old middle school student was on pace to set a personal best in a cross-country race. Midway through the race, however, Makenna Finnegan, from Shelby Middle School, came upon another runner, 13-year-old Elaine Hohman, of Donnell Middle School. The rival runner was clutching her stomach and seemed to be in pain. So Makenna stopped to help. As a result of this intervention, both runners ended up being disqualified from the race. Talk about unsportsmanlike like conduct. She may have lost the race, but the wins in the compassion department. It’s nice to see examples where empathy towards others are still held above the competitive spirit.
